YSU HONOR STUDENTS COMPLETE RESEARCH REGARDING YTOWN CENTRAL AREA DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY
"This presentation is the culmination of research completed by a small group of honors students at Youngstown State University representing a variety of majors, ages, and resident statuses. The research encompassed a parcel-by-parcel property study, formal and informal field surveys, and presentations from representatives by major project coordinators in both the Wick and Downtown areas. The solutions developed focused on low-cost, high-impact projects to be completed in the immediate future. The final product was presented to a receptive group of university and city officials, followed by an open forum for participants. The solutions developed followed the common themes of physical and lifestyle connections required to link the Wick area, downtown, and campus for student use. Solutions in the Wick area focused on improvements to pedestrian thoroughfares and programmatic connectivity with Wick Park. In the downtown area, suggested changes include safety and visual appearance upgrades to make the city’s center more inviting to students. University involvement considered programmatic renovations, including the creation of a comprehensive freshman seminar, that focus on academic, cultural, and civic participation with city institutions. These suggestions attempt to cultivate a positive atmosphere for city and university residents to foster interest and involvement with the redevelopment of Youngstown."
